Original Mountain Marathon October 2018

Sometimes we all just need a little motivation to get us off the couch and outside, exploring and adventuring in this great world of ours.

3-1-5 is More Than a Health Club. We have created many healthy partnerships with one main goal….to inspire and motivate people to the benefits and joy of active living.

You can use a health club to train in a supportive, encouraging enviornment and you can put that training into practice and get out and about and enjoy the beauty of our natural surroundings.

We have numerous training opportunities at 3-1-5 and here’s just one of them! Our resident partner ‘OMM’ have a fabulous event coming up in the Autumn and here they tell us all about it…

The event:

The OMM – Original Mountain Marathon October 27th – 28th 2018

This will be the 51st edition of the OMM (formerly KIMM). This year we will be in the South West of the UK. The route takes on fantastic mountains in one of the biggest and toughest challenges in the sporting calendar.

The fundamentals of the event are self-reliance, route selection, moving quickly over difficult terrain, kit management, endurance, teamwork & sound mountain judgement.

On the start line you & your partner will receive a map of your chosen course. Your team must then a plan a route to visit the marked checkpoints finishing at the overnight wild camp on day 1.

Throughout the event you are expected to use your understanding of the terrain & conditions you’re heading into to. With this in mind you need to choose the kit you will require for the 2 days. This includes the unsupported overnight wild camp.

On Day 2 you will receive a new map and selection of checkpoints. You will then plan a route that will take you into a different area of the 400km2 course before returning to the finish.

About the OMM:

The UK’s biggest mountain race has shaped the UK outdoor community for 50 years. Since 1968 the UK’s greatest running legends, product creators & influential people have stood on the start line.

In October 2000 competitors will gather again for the 51st event.

So, an event of this seriousness requires competitors to be self-reliant and prepared for adverse conditions throughout the event, for this reason we have a mandatory kit list. Items on the list are essential to ensure you can move safely in the mountains:

  • Taped waterproof jacket with hood
  • Taped waterproof trousers
  • Clothing suitable for mountain running and walking
  • Spare base layer top
  • Spare full leg cover
  • Warm layer top
  • Hat, Gloves & Socks
  • Footwear designed for trail and fell use
  • Head torch capable of giving useable light for a minimum of 12 hours
  • Whistle & Compass
  • Map (as supplied)
  • Insulated Sleeping bag
  • First aid equipment
  • Pen/pencil and paper capable of being used in wet conditions
  • Survival bag (not a sheet)
  • Rucksack
  • Emergency rations
  • Water carrying capability
  • Spare warm kit and insulated sleeping bag must be waterproofed (i.e. in a drybag)

Additionally, each team must carry between them:

  • Cooking equipment including stove with sufficient fuel for duration of the race, plus some spare for emergency use, left at the end of the event
  • Tent with sewn in groundsheet
  • Food for 36 hours for two peopleOMM night time sleep tent at 315 Health club

Perfectly placed in the 3-1-5 Health Club, your training meets your technical requirements with state of the art facilities alongside the very best advice and experience to help you reach your goals; whether that’s to run 5km, start trail running or compete at the top level of mountain marathons.

The unique demands of this event require an all round strength and resilience that is not gained just by running, a combination of cross training alongside strength and conditioning work will prepare you for 48hrs of tough graft.
