From 3-1-5 to the Komodo's

Building strength, confidence and friendships through inclusive fitness
My journey began at 315 Gym when I joined as an apprentice at 18. Working across gym instruction, pool activities and swimming teaching gave me the opportunity to support people with different abilities, experiences and goals.
One introduction would take that journey much further than I could have imagined.
Meeting Shaun

Around two and a half years ago, I was teaching a strength class when I was introduced to Shaun Gash, who was joining the group in his wheelchair.
At first, I wasn’t sure how best to adapt the session. Shaun helped me understand what worked for him, what didn’t, and how we could approach the activities together.
That conversation became the foundation of our work: listening, learning and developing training around the individual.
Training with a purpose
As we began working one-to-one, I researched activities suited to Shaun’s strengths, needs and ambitions. Together, we tried different approaches and developed a personalised plan to support his charity challenges.
One of those challenges was kayaking around the Komodo Islands in Indonesia—a trip I proudly joined in September 2026.
Before we travelled, balance and stability in the kayak became key training objectives. The work we did at 315 took on a very real purpose: helping Shaun prepare for the demands of the adventure ahead.
Putting preparation into practice
In Indonesia, we continued adapting, finding the best position for Shaun in the boat and responding to conditions on the water. Alongside calmer stretches, we crossed open water with waves that tested our preparation.
Watching Shaun navigate those conditions was an incredibly proud moment. Seeing our work in the gym contribute to something that mattered so much to him was unforgettable.
The experience also taught me how much planning goes into making an expedition accessible—from accommodation and daily activities to personal support and practical arrangements.
Inclusion starts well before the adventure begins.

An experience that changed me too
Travelling somewhere unfamiliar, meeting new people, kayaking and stepping outside my normal routine brought challenges of my own.
But I found myself surrounded by a wonderfully supportive group of people who became friends.
What began with a strength class at 315 became a life-changing experience in the Komodo Islands—and a powerful reminder of what listening, preparation and teamwork can make possible.
I’m looking forward to the next adventure.
